Williamson’s Journey: From Being Forgotten to Finding Hope

June 26, 2025 | News

By the time Katalemwa Cheshire Home (KCH), our partners in Uganda, found three-year-old Niwenyesiga Williamson in early 2025, his condition had deeply deteriorated.

Born with hydrocephalus, Williamson underwent brain surgery just two days after birth. Initially referred for follow-up care, he was soon lost in the system after his parents separated. With his father relocating in search of work and his mother no longer present, Williamson was left in the care of his elderly grandmother—who struggled with chronic illness and extreme poverty.

Without consistent care, nutrition, or support, Williamson’s health declined rapidly. He missed medical reviews, stopped therapy, and became severely malnourished. By the time he was rediscovered, he had brown, brittle hair, peeling skin, and showed clear signs of physical decline.

Through the Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) programme of Katalemwa Cheshire Home, supported by the Enablement Foundation, Williamson’s story began to change.

  • He was immediately enrolled in nutritional therapy and provided with fortified food supplements.

  • A local Village Health Team (VHT) member was assigned to provide home-based rehabilitation and weekly follow-ups.

  • KCH facilitated transport to clinical reviews, involving his father in his care once more.

  • A neurosurgeon recommended a second surgery, which will be possible once Williamson reaches the target weight.

Thanks to the CBR programme, Williamson’s health has shown remarkable improvement. From a MUAC (mid-upper arm circumference) of 7cm, he has grown to 11.5cm. His weight is steadily increasing, now at 12kg—nearing the required 13kg for surgery. He is smiling again, engaged, and responding to care.

This transformation was made possible by community outreach, persistent follow-up, and collaborative support—but above all, by the commitment to never give up on a child.

Katalemwa Cheshire Home, with the support of the Enablement Foundation, continues to work tirelessly to ensure that children like Williamson are not left behind.
