It doesn’t always start in a hospital. Sometimes it starts with a knock on a family’s door.

In many rural communities in Uganda, children with disabilities are still identified too late—or not at all. Distance, poverty, stigma and a lack of rehabilitation services prevent thousands of children from receiving the support they need.

That is why Katalemwa Cheshire Home (KCH) is investing in something remarkably simple, yet incredibly powerful: Village Health Teams (VHTs).

These community volunteers are trained to recognise developmental delays early, support families in their own homes, provide basic rehabilitation guidance, promote good nutrition and hygiene, and connect children with health and rehabilitation services.

They are not just delivering services.

They are restoring hope.

Every home visit means a child is seen instead of hidden. A caregiver gains confidence instead of feeling alone. A family becomes part of a supportive community instead of facing disability in isolation.

This is what we call the Village Effect.

When one trained volunteer supports one child, the impact extends far beyond that family. It strengthens neighbourhoods, schools, local health services and, ultimately, the entire community.

Real and lasting change does not happen because people travel to rehabilitation centres.

It happens when rehabilitation reaches the village.

Together with Enablement Foundation, KCH is building a model where communities become the first line of support for children with disabilities—and where, step by step, local governments take ownership to ensure these services continue long into the future.

Because every child deserves the opportunity to grow, participate and thrive—no matter where they are born.
