The Village Effect: Rethinking Disability Care in Uganda

December 2, 2025 | Publications

Across Uganda, a quiet revolution is taking place — one household at a time.
Through the partnership between Enablement Foundation (EF), Katalemwa Cheshire Home (KCH), and Uganda’s Village Health Teams (VHTs), children with disabilities are now receiving rehabilitation, care, and support directly in their own communities.

This community-based model brings life-changing services closer to home — reducing costs, empowering families, and strengthening local capacity.

Each trained VHT supports up to 30 households, using local knowledge, mentorship, and digital tools like RehApp developed by Enablement Foundation to ensure that every child gets the support they need.

The results speak for themselves:
€4 invested = 7 children supported
80% of funds go directly to local communities
Sustainable care systems that continue long after project funding ends
This is smart investment with lasting impact — inclusion powered by people.
